1. About These Terms

These Terms of Service form a binding agreement between you and Sew It Forward. They set out the rules for using the website and for taking part in the services we offer at the bench. They replace any earlier terms that may have appeared on this site.

Where a separate written quotation, booking confirmation or service note contains terms for a particular job, those specific terms apply alongside these terms. If there is a direct conflict, the specific written term for that job prevails, but only for that job.

We may provide notices about these terms on the website, by email or at the bench. A notice counts as given when it is published, sent or handed over. You are responsible for keeping your contact details current so that a notice can reach you.

2. Who We Are

Sew It Forward is a sewing bench and computer integrated systems design practice located at 2975 Don Mills Road, North York - M2J 3B7, Canada (CA). We offer mending, lessons, donation intake, fitting hours, a paper pattern library and seasonal sewing bee sittings. We also build and maintain the small record tools that keep those services organised.

In these terms, the words Sew It Forward, we, us and our refer to this business. The words you and your refer to the person using the website or receiving a service. If you act for an organisation, you confirm that you have authority to bind that organisation to these terms.

Our website was designed and developed with the help of StitchForward. StitchForward provides design and development support and does not provide the bench services that are described here.

3. Use of the Website

You may use the website for lawful purposes and in a way that does not interfere with the use and enjoyment of the site by other people. The site is provided as a public notice board that describes the bench, the services and the rules that apply.

You agree not to attempt to gain unauthorised access to any part of the site, not to introduce malicious code, not to scrape content at a volume that burdens our servers, and not to use the site to send spam or unlawful material.

We may add, change or remove parts of the website at any time. We may also suspend the website for maintenance. We try to keep the site available, but we do not promise that it will never be interrupted, and we do not accept responsibility for a delay caused by events outside our reasonable control.

4. Our Services

The bench offers six core services: mending ticket bays, lesson note runs, donation log desks, fitting hour windows, pattern library reviews and sewing bee sittings. Each service is described on the services page of this website, and the description there forms part of these terms.

We provide every service with reasonable skill and care, using materials that are suitable for the work. Where a garment or a material is fragile, we will explain the risk before work begins and we will agree the approach in writing.

Some services depend on the state of the item you bring to the bench. A repair that looks simple on the surface may reveal a worn seam or a damaged lining. In that case we will stop, contact you and agree a revised approach rather than proceed without your consent.

5. Bookings and Fitting Windows

A fitting hour window is reserved for a specific date and time. A booking is confirmed when we send a written confirmation by email or message. Please arrive within the first ten minutes of your window so that the full time can be used.

If you arrive late, we will do what we can in the time that remains, but we may offer a shorter fitting rather than run into the next window. If you cannot attend, please tell us at least twenty four hours in advance so that the time can be offered to another person.

We may move a booking when an emergency affects the bench, when a team member is unwell, or when a safety issue makes the bench unsuitable. If we move a booking, we will offer the next available window or a full refund of any amount already paid.

6. Mending Tickets

Every item left for repair receives a mending ticket at the bench. The ticket records the item, the requested repair, the date received and the date collected. Please check the ticket when you leave the item and tell us if any detail is wrong.

Items are held at the bench for ninety days after a notice that the repair is ready. After that period we will make reasonable attempts to contact you. If we cannot reach you within a further thirty days, we may treat the item as abandoned and pass it to a community donation programme, after removing any personal material from pockets.

We take care of every item, but we cannot accept responsibility for a pre-existing weakness that fails during normal handling, or for an item that is left in a state that makes the repair unsafe. In those cases we will contact you before we do any work.

We do not accept responsibility for valuables, documents or money left in a garment. Please empty pockets and bags before you leave an item at the bench.

7. Lessons and Classes

A lesson place is confirmed when we receive a booking and any required deposit. Lesson note runs are issued after the class, and a copy is shared with the student. The notes are written for the student and are not a commercial pattern that may be resold.

Each class has a small maximum number of places so that every student can use a machine. A place cannot be transferred to another person without our agreement, but we will consider a request when it is made before the class begins.

A young person may attend when a responsible adult has booked the place and has agreed to the safety briefing. The adult remains responsible for the young person during the class and must arrange collection after the class ends.

8. Donations

We accept donations of cloth, thread, tools and machines when they are clean, safe and in a condition that can be used at the bench. We may decline a donation when it cannot be stored safely or when it does not meet the needs of the bench.

A donation is recorded at the donation log desk with its weight, condition and date. Once accepted, a donation becomes the property of Sew It Forward, and we may pass it on to a student or another community programme. We do not normally return a donation, but we will discuss an exception before you leave the item.

We do not provide a valuation for tax purposes. A donation receipt for a material gift is issued where the law allows it, and the receipt reflects the information recorded at the desk rather than an estimate of resale value.

9. Pattern Library

The paper pattern library is available for reference at the bench. A pattern may be borrowed only under the rules printed on the library index card. The borrower is responsible for the pattern while it is in their care and must return every piece, including the instruction sheet.

Pattern library reviews are written into the index on a schedule. A review records the pattern number, the review date and the reason for any change. The review note is part of the library record and may be consulted by another borrower.

A pattern that is lost or damaged beyond use may be charged at the replacement cost stated on the index card. We will always discuss the charge with the borrower first and will waive it when the damage was caused by normal wear.

10. Sewing Bee Sittings

Sewing bee sittings are open sessions where the bench shares one project. A sitting has a small number of places, and a place may be reserved in advance. Guests may bring a project or simply watch, and the bench record lists participants who ask to be included.

A sitting follows a simple rule of kindness. Please share the machines, keep the bench clear and speak with respect to every person at the table. A person who behaves in a way that makes others unsafe may be asked to leave.

Materials provided at a sitting are for use during the sitting. A finished sample made during a sitting belongs to the maker unless the sitting is described as a demonstration, in which case the bench keeps the sample.

11. Pricing and Payment

Prices for mending, lessons and fittings are shown in a written quotation or on the services page at the time of booking. A quotation is valid for thirty days unless a shorter period is stated.

Payment is due at collection for a mending ticket, at booking for a lesson and at the end of a fitting window. We accept the payment methods described at the bench. Any applicable tax is added at the rate required by law.

If a repair proves more extensive than the quotation, we will contact you with a revised price before continuing. You may accept the revised price or ask us to stop the work. If you ask us to stop, you pay only for the work completed to that point.

12. Cancellations and Refunds

A lesson place may be cancelled without charge up to forty eight hours before the class. A cancellation within forty eight hours may be charged at half the lesson fee because the place was held for you. A cancellation on the day of the class is charged in full.

A fitting window may be moved without charge up to twenty four hours before the appointment. A later change may be charged a small administration fee, which will be stated at booking.

A mending charge is refundable when the repair cannot be completed for a reason within our control. It is not refundable when the repair has been completed as agreed. Where a deposit was paid, the deposit is applied to the final price.

If we cancel a service, we refund any amount paid for the cancelled part in full. A refund is made by the method used for payment unless another method is agreed.

13. Your Responsibilities

You are responsible for giving us accurate information about an item, a garment or a booking. If a detail is wrong, the repair or the fitting may not meet the need, and we cannot be responsible for that outcome.

Please tell us about anything that may affect the work, such as an unusual fabric, a previous repair, a stain that needs special care or a sentimental item that must not be altered. The more we know before we begin, the better the result will be.

You are also responsible for keeping your own copies of any pattern or lesson material that is important to you. We keep a copy for our records during the retention period but we do not guarantee a permanent archive.

14. Health and Safety

A sewing bench uses sharp tools, hot irons and machines with moving parts. Every person at the bench must follow the safety briefing and use the equipment as instructed. Do not remove a guard, do not operate a machine while tired, and do not bring a child to a machine without supervision.

Please tell a team member about any allergy, mobility need or medical condition that could matter during a lesson or a fitting. We will record the note only with your consent and will share it only with the person who needs it.

If an incident happens, please report it immediately so that we can give first aid, record the event and improve our practice. A failure to report an incident may make a later claim harder to resolve for everyone.

15. Intellectual Property

The website, its design, its text and the small scripts that make it work belong to Sew It Forward or are used with permission. The name Sew It Forward, the bench marks and the written service descriptions are protected by the law of copyright and other rights.

You may read, print and share a page for personal and non commercial use. You may not copy the design, republish the text as your own or use the name in a way that suggests a partnership that does not exist.

Lesson notes and pattern review cards are provided for individual learning. They may not be sold or bundled into a commercial course without a written licence. If you would like to use our material for a class or a community project, ask us and we will usually say yes.

16. Content You Send Us

When you send us a message, a photograph or a note, you keep ownership of it. You give us permission to use it for the purpose for which you sent it, such as answering a question or completing a repair.

We will not publish your message or your photograph on the website without your clear permission. If you ask us to remove something, we will remove it from the active record and, where practical, from backups within the normal backup cycle.

Please do not send us content that belongs to someone else without permission, and do not send us unlawful material. You are responsible for what you send, and you confirm that you have the right to share it.

17. Disclaimers

The website is provided on an as available basis. We work to keep it accurate and available, but we do not promise that every page will always be current, complete or free of error. A service description on the website is a guide and not a guarantee of a particular outcome.

The information on this site is general in nature. It is not legal, financial or medical advice. A decision that involves a garment of high value or a legal matter should be discussed with an appropriate professional before you act.

Our record tools are built with care, but we do not promise that they will never lose a record. We keep paper copies for the records that matter most so that the bench can continue even if a digital system is unavailable.

18. Limitation of Liability

To the extent the law allows, Sew It Forward is not responsible for indirect or consequential loss, for lost profit or for lost opportunity that arises from the use of the website or a service.

Where liability cannot be excluded, our total liability for a service is limited to the amount paid for that service, or to the replacement cost of the item, whichever is lower. Where no amount was paid, the limit is the amount that a reasonable person would consider fair for the work involved.

Nothing in these terms limits liability for fraud, for a deliberate act, for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for any other liability that cannot be limited by law.

19. Indemnity

You agree to compensate Sew It Forward for a loss that we suffer because of a claim that arises from your unlawful use of the website, from material you send us without the right to share it, or from a breach of these terms that you cause.

This obligation applies only to the extent that the loss is caused by your conduct and not by our own act or omission. We will tell you promptly about a claim and we will cooperate in a reasonable response.

20. Privacy

Our handling of personal information is described in the Privacy Policy on this website. The Privacy Policy forms part of these terms. By using the website or a service, you acknowledge that you have read the Privacy Policy.

If you have a privacy question, please write to notify@sewitforward.buzz. We answer privacy questions in the order they arrive and we give each question a named person who is responsible for the reply.

The Privacy Policy explains your rights, the retention periods we apply and the way we protect the records that are kept at the bench. Please read it together with these terms.

21. Third Party Sites and Tools

The website may link to a supplier, a community group or another site that we think is useful. We do not control those sites and we are not responsible for their content, their availability or their practices.

The contact form prepares a message in your own email program. Once you press send, the message travels through your email provider. We cannot control how that provider handles the message in transit, and we recommend that you read its privacy notice when that matters to you.

If a link on our site no longer works or leads to a page you consider unsafe, please tell us. We review links each season and we remove those that no longer meet our standard.

22. Suspension and Termination

We may suspend or end your access to the website or to a service when you breach these terms, when your conduct puts another person at risk, or when we are required to do so by law. Where the situation allows it, we will give you a warning and a chance to put things right first.

If we end a service that you have paid for, we refund the part of the service that has not been delivered. If you end a service, the cancellation rules in section twelve apply.

Clauses that by their nature should survive the end of the agreement, including those on intellectual property, limitation of liability and governing law, continue to apply.

23. Governing Law and Disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. A dispute is subject to the courts of that province, unless the law of your place of residence gives you a right to a different forum.

Before a formal step is taken, we ask that you write to us and describe the issue. We will try to resolve it in a direct and practical conversation. Many questions at the bench are settled with a short meeting and a simple repair.

If a term of these terms is found to be invalid, the rest of the terms continue in force. The invalid term is read down to the extent needed to make it enforceable, and the parties keep the intended effect as closely as the law allows.

24. General Provisions

These terms, together with the Privacy Policy and any written quotation or booking confirmation, form the whole agreement between you and Sew It Forward for the subject matter they cover. They replace any earlier discussion on the same subject.

A failure to enforce a term on one occasion is not a waiver of that term on another occasion. A waiver is effective only when it is given in writing by a person with the authority to give it.

You may not transfer your rights under these terms without our written agreement. We may transfer our rights and duties to a successor business that agrees to honour these terms, and we will tell you when that happens.

25. Changes to These Terms

We may update these terms when the way the bench works changes or when the law requires it. When a change is material, we update the date at the top of this page and publish a short note describing the change.

A change applies to a booking or a service that begins after the change is published. A booking that is already confirmed continues under the terms that applied when it was confirmed, unless the change is required by law or unless you agree to the new terms.

We recommend that you read this page when you return to the site. The current version is the one that applies from the date shown at the top.
